US soccer and Major League Soccer announced a multi-year deal with Headspace, an American-English company on 18th April. Headspace is an online healthcare company which specializes in medicine. The meditation will provide thousands of app subscription to the all the athletes, coaches and league and club staff to strengthen their meditation skills. US soccer is emphasizing the need of mental wellness and this deal is a reflection of that.
Headspace is supposed to provide in person introductory training session. The sessions will be conducted under the supervision of co-founder Andy Puddicombe and company’s Head of Sports and Fitness, Lindsay Shaffer. Training session will include both the men’s and women’s national teams. The ten features of the training will include recovery, motivation, analysis, competition, concentration.
MLS will be exploring the scientific research opportunities into the role of meditation for better performance. Athletes and coaches will have the access to Headspace’s comprehensive library, including “Headspace for sports”.
Lindsay Shaffer remarked about the partnership saying, “While athletes go to great lengths to physically train their bodies, the mind is often neglected. Mental training is the future of sports, and meditation and mindfulness are proven techniques to maintain mental fitness. We thrilled provide Headspace as the mental training tool to some of the world’s greatest athletes, helping them to achieve their performance goals, support their overall health and happiness and work with the US soccer.”
