Sports Ministry of Russia has refused to include cricket on its register of officially recognized sports.The order came into being after England defeated New Zealand in World Cup final on 15th July.

Mini-golf, Petanque and draughts are all considered as the recognized sports in Russia. The order will translate to no financial aid for the sport, albeit not a banning instruction.

Alexander Sorokin, the member of the Moscow cricket Sports Federation, said the refusal was down to error in its application for inclusion on the ministry’s register. He conveyed to the local new agency that the federation will aim for official status and they are hopeful for the sport’s future in the country.

Cricket is the second most popular sports in the world after football. In Russia, cricket federation and national teams exists. In many parts of British Empire, Cricket remains a very popular sport. It is watched by two billion people in Indian subcontinent.

Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is another sport that was denied recognition for official status.
